Every component on this page was designed as part of a specific building project and fabricated to tolerances that standard off-the-shelf hardware cannot meet. All items are made to order. Send a drawing, a photo, or a description — and we'll work out what's possible.
The entrance door to House Yzerfontein is cut from 10mm mild steel plate. Its perforation pattern was not drawn by hand — it was generated in Grasshopper using the same geometric logic as the concrete vault above it: a parametric algorithm that produces a field of openings varying in density and orientation across the surface, filtering light into the entry sequence.
The door requires five people to move. It is hinged on stainless steel pins machined to custom dimensions, with a flush-mounted locking bar that disappears into the frame when open. The material is left raw: no paint, no coating. Mild steel in the coastal climate of Yzerfontein.
Available as a custom commission. Dimensions, pattern density, and hardware to suit your opening. Fabrication time: 6–10 weeks.
The balustrade at House Yzerfontein uses vertical mild steel uprights with horizontal stainless steel rod infill — the rods drawn tight between posts, creating a screen that reads as near-invisible from a distance and as precise metalwork up close.
The system is designed to work with stone, concrete, or timber sill details. Posts are set in core-drilled holes or bolted to a structural sill depending on the substrate. End posts are tensioned to resist the lateral load of the horizontal rods. All welding is ground flush.
Supplied as a complete system: uprights, end posts, rod, tensioners, and fixings. Designed to your run length and height. Also available as a staircase balustrade.
The external staircase at Buffelsdrift is built from mild steel bar stock, hand-forged and welded into open hairpin stringers that taper as they rise. Each leg is individually made — no two are identical. The result is a staircase that reads as drawn rather than manufactured: a loose, calligraphic quality in steel against the lime-plastered stone of the Karoo farmstead.
The design works with the material rather than against it. Steel bar bends readily. The hairpin form makes efficient use of the material's natural behaviour in the forge. Treads are stone or timber set between the stringers, with no separate fixing hardware visible from above.
Available as an external or internal stair. Rise, going, and stringer profile to suit. Treads specified separately or supplied.
The hardware set developed for the Sheep Herder's Cottage at Buffelsdrift is the most complete expression of the design-to-fabrication methodology this practice has produced. Every component was modelled in Onshape from point cloud data and machined or cut to tolerances the existing nineteenth-century stone walls had never been asked to maintain.
The set includes glass hangers, sliding door mechanisms, folded plate connection brackets, machined pivot pins, and the toplight frame system — all in mild or stainless steel. The components are designed to work together as a system or can be supplied individually.
Each component can be adapted to a new project. Send us your geometry — point cloud, survey drawing, or photo — and we'll design the fitting.
The door lock for the Sheep Herder's Cottage was designed because nothing available off the shelf would work with the custom door geometry. The mechanism was designed in Onshape, machined on a lathe from stainless and mild steel bar stock, and assembled in-house.
The lock operates with a flush-mounted lever that retracts a precision-machined bolt. All moving parts are turned to tolerance. The engagement is smooth and silent — the feel of something made to fit rather than something adapted to fit. No rattles. No play. No standard parts.
Available as a custom commission for any door thickness and frame configuration. The mechanism can be adapted for sliding doors, pivot doors, or hinged doors. Each lock is made to your specification.
Send us your project: drawings, photos, or a description. Include your location for a shipping estimate.
We review the geometry and confirm whether the standard design fits or a custom adaptation is needed. No charge for this step.
Fixed price quotation including fabrication, surface treatment, packaging, and courier shipping.
Made to your confirmed drawings. Shipped directly to site. Lead times 4–10 weeks depending on item.
